It often happens that the validity of your titre de séjour ends just a few days after your work contract finishes. There are many reasons for this, too many to count! However, you must have a plan for your future at least 4 months before the end of your titre de séjour. This plan will allow you to request a visa extension — otherwise, you risk falling into a complicated situation.

Even if you don’t yet have the legal proof of your new position, you can still explain your plan using a placeholder document.

1. Submit your future plan (between 4 and 2 months before expiry)

When ANEF opens the system to accept renewal requests for your status, you can submit your application. You have three main options:

1.1. Continue your current visa status, for example Passeport Talent - Chercheur.

1.2. Transition to unemployment (chômage) while keeping your Passeport Talent status.

In this case, your category will change to recherche d’emploi, but the titre de séjour remains under the same general framework.

You’ll need to submit an attestation from France Travail, which is issued at the end of your contract.

1.3. Apply for the “Recherche d’emploi / Création d’entreprise” residence permit.

To obtain this permit, you must prove you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your stay.

This generally means:

• Showing financial means equal to at least the SMIC (French minimum wage) for 12 months:
  • ~€1,400 net/month × 12 = €16,800 total
  • Proof can include:
    • Personal bank statements (French or foreign accounts)
    • A notarized letter of financial support
    • Other evidence of stable income/resources
